Day 15: Majestic Ride . . . Chitina and Valdez

We departed Anchorage at 9:08 am, in route to Chitina, and then Valdez.

Our route took us over two mountain passes.

Road from Anchorage to GlennAllen

55 MPH never felt so slow, again!!!!

Matanuska Glacier

It is glowing off to the right.

New record low!

Can you see the frost forming on the visor?

The poles on the side of the road guide the snow plow to stay on the road.

Chitina Sidetrip

Long road to Chitina.

3 Mile Lake

2 Mile Lake

Still 2 Mile Lake

1 Mile Lake

0 Mile Lake . . .  Chitina.

There should be plenty of room for a skinny motorcycle.

Now that is a real one lane road . . .

 Famous “Bridge to Nowhere”
government pork barrel project.

Nobody lives on the other side.

Coming back from nowhere.

We missed the pig roast!

Overnight parking was pricy!

Road to Valdez

Is that the pass?

Could we be going up that high?

Getting higher. . .

and higher. . .

not high enough . . .

Thompson pass - Up in the snow and clouds.

Looks cold and it is cold.

Going down the other side of the pass.

I stopped to get a good picture of Bridal Veil waterfall.

Mick stopped at Horsetail Falls, waiting for me

Contest Results

We have discovered that in order to “comment” on the blog, you must jump through some hoops like have a google account, etc.  We did not know this, and apologize.

With that said:
No, it is not musk ox skin nor a “feather of some kind”.

It is also not a unicorn horn (get real!) nor a narwahl tusk.
(I was really hoping to be able to tell someone their wrong before someone gets it.  Thanks, Bud!)

With that said . . .

We have a Winner!

An unidentified caller has correctly identified the Animal part on the wall as the trophy from killing a whale.

It is the hide from the whale's lower jaw with some of the baleen still attached - the equivalent of deer antlers.

Now all we have to do is figure out who he or she is, and what he or she has won!  I am a little dissappointed I we didn't get the chance to tell more people they were wrong.

Today’s Stats:

Arrival Time in Valdez:  7:54 pm
Riding Time:  7 Hrs. 39 Mins.
Today’s Miles:  376
Total Miles:  5836
Today’s MPG:  49.2
Today’s MPH: 51.5

Tomorrow’s Destination:   Destruction Bay, again.
479 Miles, through road construction!

  1. Jim asked me to post his entry for the contest, but it appears that he is too late. But for the record, he thinks it's a Sasquatch tallywhacker.
